Pass a saliva drug test

HONG KONG (dpa) - Random drug tests could be introduced for teenage children in schools and discos as part of a package of measures considered by a government sponsored anti-narcotics group on Thursday.

An instant test kid to check for ecstasy or ketamine would cost smaller than US$4. The drug tests could be introduced later this year.

The testing proposals coincide with a survey which showed 85 per cent of parents among 1,462 people were in favour of instant testing.

Action committee limb Scarlett Pong said: “The testing can also create a deterrent effect on children who want to take drugs.”

Cheung Man-kwong, a lawmaker representing the teaching sector, said the identity of any student who assayed expressed during the school tests should be protected.

He added: “The form of sovereignty should state there is no punishment, only therapy for the students who take drugs.”

This latest initiative follows the deliverance of figures which show a prominent rise in the volumes of drugs seized this year.

Police said 30kg of heroin was seized in the first five months of this year compared with 18kg in 2007, while 35kg of cocaine was discovered this year against 9kg last year.
